latent power of the soul part I

‘Spirit, Soul and Body’

‘When thou art come into the land which the lord thy God giveth thee, thou shall not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch. Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard , or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee. Thou shalt be perfect with the lord thy God,’ Deuteronomy 18:9-13

The whole area of clairvoyancy, astrology, spiritism, telepathy etc. is taboo for Christians and expressly forbidden by God with dire consequences for those who indulge (Revelations 21)Have you, though, ever wandered how some people are successful at such things as predicting the future or in practising telepathy for instance? And what about when someone is miraculously healed at a spiritist church service or Buddhist temple? How can this happen? I’ve always answered questions on this subject by saying it is the work of Satan and his demons but there is much more to it than that.  We have to go back to the story of creation in Genesis to gain a deeper understanding of our make up and discover how, with the fall of Adam, a God given source of power within the soul was lost, and it is this power that is behind these ‘miracles’.

“The spirit and soul are two totally different organs; one belongs to God, while the other belongs to man. By whatever names one may call them, they are completely distinct in substance. The peril of the believer is to confuse the spirit for the soul and the soul for the spirit and so be deceived into accepting the counterfeit of evil spirits to the unsettling of God’s work.”

So writes Watchman Nee, a great man of God, and a martyr for the faith, in the preface to his book, ‘The Latent Power of the Soul’, written in 1933.

Let’s look at scripture to see if what he says is true.

‘And the Lord God formed the man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life: and man became a living soul.’ Genesis 2:7

So man’s body was formed of the dust of the ground, and man’s spirit was given to him by God, and after the breath of life had entered into his nostrils, man became a living soul.

‘And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterwards that which is spiritual.’  Corinthians 15:45-46

The spirit, the soul and the body are three separate entities (see 1 Thessalonians 5:23). In the relationship of these three parts of man’s nature, the spirit, which makes us conscious of and relates us to God was the highest. the body, which causes us to be related to the world, the lowest. The soul, which relates us to ourselves and gives us self consciousness was in between. Its work as the central power was to maintain the balance between spirit and body As we look into this subject further in light of the Scriptures we will see that clairvoyancy, astrology, spiritism, telepathy etc is possible through what Watchman Nee calls the ‘latent power of the soul.’ That ‘latent power of the soul’ was clearly evident in Adam before the fall.

Adam’s Powers

God told Adam to have dominion or rule over all the earth and everything living in it. (Genesis 1:27). Would God ask Adam to do something he wasn’t capable of? I don’t think so. To have dominion or rule involves management. It involves a great deal of work yet Adam was able to do it and he never felt tired. It was only after the fall that God said to him, ‘In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread’ (Genesis 3:19). Adam had tremendous brain power and an amazing memory. He gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field’ (Genesis 2:19). Could you remember even half the names of all the animals and birds in the world never mind name them?

The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. Genesis 2:15 The Garden of Eden wasn’t like your back garden – there were four rivers flowing through it (Genesis 2:10) – it was big, and for Adam ‘to dress it and keep it ‘ he must have had exceptional managerial powers. The power that Adam had must have been tremendous but before he could show all of his abilities he fell and the power was lost to him.

The Fall of Man

The enemy promised Eve, ‘ye shall be as gods’ (Genesis 3:5). She was tempted and fell, Adam followed. After the fall, according to Genesis 6, man became flesh. Man was originally a living soul but now having fallen, he became flesh. His soul had meant to be subject to the spirit’s control but now it is subject to the flesh. That’s why the Lord said, ‘My Spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh.’ Genesis 6:3.

At the fall the power that distinguished Adam from us was lost. He hadn’t lost it completely however, it was just frozen or immobilized – buried somewhere within him. He had become flesh! All of these generations later, this God-given power of Adam has become a latent force in us, his descendants. It has become a hidden power, not lost to man, but simply bound by the flesh.Every person who lives on this earth has this Adamic power although it is confined and we are not able to freely express it.

Now let us look at a passage in Revelation about conditions in the world in the ‘end times’.

‘And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no Man buyeth their merchandise any more: The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, …. and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots,  and slaves and souls of men.’ Revelation 18:11-13

Men’s souls are being treated as a commodity just like gold, silver and precious stones. This is because Satan and his puppet, the antichrist, wish to use the soul as an instrument for their activities at the end of this age.Satan attempts to break open the shell of the flesh and to release the power dormant in man’s soul in order to gain control over mankind.

MANY DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS, BEING DECEIVED INTO ACCEPTING IT IS OF GOD!

This deception is not restricted to Christianity alone but also happens with Buddhists, Hindus and all kinds of New Ageism.  They all try in their own way to release the power which Adam has left to our soul. Special supernatural power is available to those mentioned to perform miracles of healing and to predict future events etc. Many of these ‘religions’ engage in all kinds of abstinences (e.g. marriage, sexual relations, meat, alcohol) and ascetic practises with one common aim – to break all physical and material bonds so as to get the soul power released. In other practises like hypnosis, clairvoyancy, and telepathy, for example, people are able to see or hear or smell things that are thousands of miles away. Many miraculous things do happen which we cannot ignore or simply dismiss as superstitious.Satan IS behind all these para-psychic practises. He wants to develop this latent ability so as to make man feel he is as rich as God. Thus man will worship himself, although indirectly he is worshipping Satan, the great deceiver. ‘Ye will be as gods’ (Genesis 3:5)  he told Eve- he’s still saying that to mankind today.

All those who intentionally develop their soul power cannot avoid being contacted and used by the evil one.As Christians we can unwittingly be developing our soul power so it is vitally importance that we know the difference and that we know how to recognise soul power and how to react and respond to it.We will look at the Christian’s attitude and response in partII.In the meantime may the Holy Spirit of God comfort you and guide you into more of His truth, in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen!

  1. So before we got saved, Did we have a spirit and when we ask Jesus into are lifes he takes away that spirit and give us his spirit so we just have one new spirit “him” or do we have two spirits now?

  2. Hey Laura, Amen to that! Love in Jesus, Tony

  3. When Adam chose to live by his own “knowledge” of good and evil he essentially declared his independence from God. Immediately he was alienated from fellowship and cut off from the garden of God’s provision.

We were born into this alienated condition along with the rest of the human race. Sin is to miss the mark. (an archery term) The “bull’s eye” is the human spirit. Since it is sealed off we SIN with every breath we take – whether good or evil.

Then Jesus came as the Last Adam – to live 100% in submission to, and dependence on, the Father. He resisted sin to the shedding of blood and then He said “It is finished”. Now HE has become the Life-giving Spirit to enter into and live in our spirit!! Our challange is to now learn to be fully dependent on our spirit and know HIM as the “Amen” to the Father in all things.

To attempt to assert influence by our exercise of our will or the skills of persuasion or effect otheres by the influence of our emotions, is to be in ADAM, living under the curse by the sweat of our brow.

  4. Hey Neda, thank you for your comment. Yes, you are right, as Christians we do have power from God in the form of the Holy Spirit who comes to live in us when we believe in Jesus. However, I also believe that all people have the latent power of the soul and when they start to use this, they become susceptable to the guiles of Satan and his demons. You are also right if you are saying that when God tells us to do something, we must obey.
    Love in Jesus, Tony

  5. I think that evry one can do evry work that s/he wants and this is because of God.
Because God wants to we have such power and he create us then just he know that what we can do and he can help us. Then it is very important that we do all things that we think they are necessary and if we don’t do them we are guilty.
